View through Europeana Collections
A famous story from Heiki Monogatari. Prince Mochihito, brother of the dethroned Emperor Takakura, flees with his companion, Munenobu, after he had plotted against Taira no Kiyomori in 1180 and had been uncovered. They are both disguised as women wearing costumes for travel. Hasebe no Nobutsura, in the service of Mochihito, is the one who helps them flee. It is represented here, in the foreground, watching the escape. He was captured but, just under torture, refused to reveal the place where the prince had taken refuge. Later, after the Taira clan was defeated in 1185, he became lord of Noto Province.
