A Reprinting History of the Brontës’ Poetry, 1850–1899
View through CrossRef
This chapter focuses on the reprinting history of the Brontës’ verse in periodicals and newspapers between 1851 and 1899. Throughout the century, editors regularly culled poems from books and reviews and repurposed them as content in periodicals, newspapers, and anthologies. When a review, feature article, or biography included examples of the Brontës’ verse or when a new reissue of Poems appeared on the market, this served as a catalyst for a fresh round of reprintings in the popular press. As the Brontës’ work migrated between various print media, it fell subject to the interventions of editors, who viewed verse as ‘found’ content that could be used and modified at will. Consequently, the Brontës’ poems might be retitled, published anonymously, set to music, paired with ornate illustrations, or trimmed into newspaper titbits. The reprinting history of the Brontës’ verse thus tells us as much about the enduring resonance of their work as it does about the editors who creatively adapted their verse to appeal to a wide range of readers.
