View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter offers musical analysis and historical context for Ronald Roseman’s Partita for Solo Oboe (1997). Born into a culturally vibrant environment in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933, Ronald Roseman became an influential oboist and composer with a passion for Baroque and contemporary music. This chapter contextualizes Roseman’s musical contributions within his broader career as a performer, composer, recording artist, and pedagogue at Yale, Juilliard, Stony Brook, and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. His performance experience intimately informed his compositional style and process, and his Partita for Solo Oboe, inspired by J.S. Bach’s Partita in A Minor, reflects this synergistic relationship. All of his pieces were written for specific individuals and demonstrate his love of collaboration. This chapter offers an analysis of Roseman’s Partita, examining the eclectic mix of Baroque, blues, and jazz influences, as well as unbridled virtuosity and the expressive capacity of the oboe.
