Francis Poulenc, Sonata for Oboe and Piano (1962)

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter examines Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Oboe and Piano (1962) and explores the intricate relationship between the composer’s personal journey and his musical output. Born in Paris to a wealthy, arts-loving family, Poulenc was introduced to music from a young age, eventually becoming an accomplished pianist. His experience was shaped by the religious fervor of his father and the worldly charm of his mother, resulting in a personality characterized by sharp contrasts and reflected in his compositions. Poulenc’s works, notably his final composition, the Sonata for Oboe and Piano, reveal his complex paradoxical persona. Evoking elements of both solemnity and wildness, this piece is regarded by commentators as an introspective farewell. This chapter explores the sonata’s intricate harmonies and unique slow-fast-slow format, juxtaposing its contemplative mood with moments of frenzied intensity. It also explores Poulenc’s relationship with contemporary literary circles and his reflections on mortality through nostalgia.
