Germanicus' visit to Egypt

View through CrossRef
Abstract In early January of 19 CE , Germanicus (15 BCE –19 CE ), the nephew and adopted son of the emperor Tiberius, interrupted his political mission in the Roman dominions of Eastern Anatolia and the Near East for a visit to Alexandria and Egypt. The historian Tacitus, our main source for the prince's journey, claims in his Annates (2.59–61) that while Germanicus' official motive was his concern ( cura ) for the province, he actually just wanted to study the country's antiquities.
