Modulated Temperature Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (MT-DSC) is a modification of differential scanning calorimetry. In this thermal method, the sample is heated with an underlying linear heating rate with an oscillation superimposed onto it. Separation of the sample response to the linear heating rate from the response to the modulation allows additional information to be obtained. Most usefully, the heat capacity information can be separated from other transitions occurring over the same temperature range allowing straightforward and fast determination of glass transition temperatures that are the hallmark of amorphous materials. It can also be used to investigate other processes where it is useful to separate the heat capacity changes from overlying kinetic events such as during curing. The technique has found application to a range of materials including foods, pharmaceuticals and polymers.
