Porträt Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778)

View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Thomas Augustine Arne. This is a caricature intended to depict the English composer of the pre-classical period, Thomas Arne. Here he is depicted as a semicircular figure in the right-hand profile sitting on a key instrument, a harpsichord. The exaggeration of his elongated melancholic face and the attitude of the hands reproduce the character of a caricature. The composer wears a wig with a braid and a long coat, behind his hip the bang of his stomach evokes. In 1745 he was employed as a composer for the Vauxhall Gardens in London and attracted the interest of the audience with some small fine tunes. The melody of an unofficial English national anthem, “Rule, Britannia!,” also comes from Him. The LWL Museum of Art and Culture in Münster has a specimen of this paper, the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London have red chalk specimens in their collections. Signature: Done from an Original Sketch by F. Bartolozzi. Pub. as the Act directs May 10.th 1782 by W.m Humphrey No. 227 Strand. Caption: Dr. Arne. (Stiftung Händel-Haus Halle Foundation)
