Le premier bataillon du corps de tirailleurs sénégalais a été créé en 1857 à l’initiative de Louis Faidherbe qui occupait alors le poste de gouverneur du Sénégal. Nonobstant ce vocable, ses membres furent recrutés dans tous les territoires de l’ancienne Afrique-Occidentale française afin de servir le drapeau tricolore. Cette appellation avait pour objectif de les distinguer des autres régiments provenant d’Afrique du Nord. Les tirailleurs sénégalais ont combattu en France et en Orient lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, de la Seconde et ont participé à celles d’Indochine et d’Algérie.
