Mechanisms of formation of anomalous large angle scattering (ALAS) and near Coulomb barrier scattering (NCBS) pictures in 4He+40Ca system are revealed using the scattering matrix approach in which the nuclear absorption and refraction phases are smooth monotonic functions of angular momentum and the quantum deflection function is of rainbow-like form.
