Demetrius in Babylonia

This chapter provides a discussion of Demetrius Poliorcetes’ activities in Babylonia, and demonstrates a number of the difficulties in unravelling the tricky chronological problems during the age of the Successors. A number of interesting sources of ancient evidence are discussed, including primary Babylonian chronicles. This chapter also reveals how Antigonus Monophthalmus ordered Demetrius to make a lightning raid on Babylonia, though the chronology of this event is extremely obscure. He did not meet his fellow Successor Seleucus, and he was only partially successful in taking Babylon, returning to the Mediterranean probably before the Peace of 311/310 BC was ratified between the other dynasts.
