DEVELOPMENT STUDIES IN THE MANDE REGION: THE LAST 20 YEARS
View through CrossRef
Abstract: This article discusses major trends within development studies in the Mande region over the last twenty years. The paper examines some of the important theoretical approaches to development and the institutional context in which the work is carried out. The following themes are highlighted: agriculture, economics, and ecology; health and population; anti-poverty initiatives; involuntary resettlement; democratization and decentralization; and urban development. The focus is on the work of practitioners, especially those from Mali, who have designed, implemented or evaluated policies, projects and programs of directed social change. The article also looks at analyses and critiques of the development system. Many Mande-zone scholars still face limited funding and opportunities for international publication. More efforts should be made to increase the effectiveness and visibility of the work of African scholar-practitioners. Broader visibility, including publication, could render development studies in the Mande zone more effective by enabling them to make a greater contribution to development theory.
