Historik Ferdinand Uličný a dejiny stredovekého Bardejova

Historian Ferdinand Uličný and the History of Medieval Bardejov This paper assesses Ferdinand Uličný´s contribution to the research of the medieval history of the town of Bardejov. Ferdinand Uličný represents the positivist trend in Slovak medieval studies, guided by the motto ad fontes. The author examines how this approach to the sources is reflected in Uličný´s works dedicated to Bardejov. The study highlights that in his initial work on the history of Bardejov from the late 1960s, F. Uličný already outlined the fundamental themes of research on this locality. During the 1970s and 1980s, Slovak historiography engaged in a debate over the interpretation of King Béla IV´s charter for the Bardejov Cistercians from 1247. Uličný addressed this charter in a study, responding to the theses of Branislav Varsik. However, as the article notes, Pavol Hudáček recently challenged some of Uličný‘s interpretations based on a broader analysis of sources, offering new insights into the earliest history of Bardejov and the issues surrounding this charter.
