This chapter presents subsequent controversies about the murals. In 1941 the city’s Park Commission wanted to destroy several of the murals because they were again alleged to be Communist propaganda. Later threats to the murals came from carelessness, vandalism, and neglect, leading at one point to a proposal to cover all the murals. In 2012 San Franciscans approved an initiative to limit commercial activities at the tower and direct that income from concessions be used to maintain the building and its murals.
