One of the most prominent and feared female journalists of her time, Anne Newport Royall was born near Baltimore, Maryland. She moved with her family to a log cabin on the western Pennsylvania frontier and then, with her widowed mother, settled in (West) Virginia. There she met and married William Royall, in whose household she and her mother worked as domestic servants.
