Epilogue: Revered or Reviled? Reisner and His Archaeological Impact

AbstractThis chapter offers a final assessment of Reisner’s life and influence on the development of archaeological method (particularly stratigraphic excavation techniques) and Egyptian archaeology. Some contemporary tributes are quoted, then the chapter emphasizes the hitherto unknown reach of Reisner’s influence, not only in training Western archaeologists but in sending his own skilled Qufti workmen and reises off to other expeditions, both in Egypt and to other sites in the Middle East. His colonialist and at times racist interpretations of the archaeological data are also summarized. Brief post-expedition histories are given for many in Reisner’s immediate circle, and an attempt at balancing the positives and negatives of a long archaeological career is made.
