The most intensively studied images on Nerva’s coins are his bronze coins that denote specific aspects of the emperor’s policy. These speak directly to Nerva’s domestic agenda and his relationship with the people of Rome, the Senate, and the Italian citizenry. For example, coins celebrate imperial distribution of grain to the urban plebs, the foresight of the Senate, and the remission of obligations of Italian communities to support the imperial courier. Nerva’s restoration coins celebrating the Deified Augustus echo a theme in Martial’s epigrams, whereby Nerva is presented as Augustus restored to the earth. Nonetheless, such coins are, generally speaking, very rare and this suggests that they did not circulate widely across the Roman Empire. Distribution of coin finds suggest that these coins were targeted primarily at an audience in Rome and Italy.
