Headstone with the depiction of King Sethos I before the god Osiris
View through Europeana Collections
The late Earthquake King Sethos I stands in official costume with royal headscarf and diadem in front of Osiris, the ruler of the underworld, wrapped in white mummies. Osiris carries crumb stick and scourge as insignia of his power in his hands. A headscarf, as worn by the Pharaohs, legitimates him as king. The connection to the underworld produces the characteristic Osiris crown on the headscarf.
In the inscription above the scene it is confirmed that the justified and turned Osiris king, the son of the Re with the name of Sethos I, arrived before Osiris, the Lord of the Underworld (Necropolis). Osiris now lends him “the power of the Re.”
