Mary Elizabeth Braddon, The Doctor’s Wife, from Temple Bar, 10 (1864), 160—2, 309—12

Abstract
In The Doctor’s Wife, Braddon (1835—1915) adapted the plot of Flaubert’s as-yet untranslated Madame Bovary. She included a fictional portrait of a sensation author, Sigismund Smith, probably based on J. F. Smith (see Section V). While Braddon sympathetically depicts the demands placed upon authors by publishers and readers, and the conventions of popular genres, her account is also implicitly patronizing in that, particularly after the publication of Lady Audley’s Secret in three volumes (1862), she enjoyed much greater literary status than her fictional author. Smith exemplifies the stereotype of the popular author from which Braddon was determined to distance herself.
