Fawwaz in al-Fatat
View through CrossRef
This chapter details Fawwaz’s role in the first Arabic women’s magazine, al-Fatat, which began publishing in late 1892. Generally seen as a one-woman operation, this magazine involved the energies of several women, including Fawwaz, and I consider that collective aspect as well as her range of writings for the magazine. How, for instance, did she turn social reporting (on elite weddings) into a gender-political concern? How did she tailor articles also published elsewhere to al-Fatat’s presumed audience? The chapter scrutinizes al-Fatat’s reception by other journals—their descriptive lexicon for this first women’s journal—as indicative of ambivalences shaping ‘the woman question’ in 1890s Egypt. In particular, ‘Abdallah Nadim’s al-Ustadh is posed as a very different commentator on gender, class, and the nation.
