Contrasting Lives: A Comparative Analysis of Eduard von Fircks and Eduard von Keyserling Through the Lens of Personal and Social Values

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter presents a comparative psychographic analysis of Eduard von Keyserling and Eduard von Fircks, exploring their contrasting responses to shared socio-cultural life themes within the German-Baltic noble milieu. Using an inter-psychographic approach, the study refines Keyserling’s personality profile by juxtaposing his experiences with those of Fircks—a physician whose professional ethos and attachment to his homeland defined his life trajectory. The analysis highlights differences in their integration within the noble community, attitudes toward tradition, and personal responses to displacement, duty, and identity formation. Keyserling’s artistic, ironic, and emancipatory outlook is contrasted with Fircks’ pragmatic and socially engaged approach, particularly in medicine and community-building. The chapter introduces the concept of the well-rounded personality, suggesting Fircks’ integration of tradition and progress, while Keyserling remained skeptical of pragmatic existence. By synthesizing idiographic and nomothetic perspectives, this comparison underscores the broader psychological and philosophical implications of personality development within historical constraints.
