Dizziness refers to a sensation of disturbed or impaired spatial orientation without a false or distorted sense of motion. It can be distinguished from vertigo, which is the sensation of self-motion when no self-motion is occurring or the sensation of distorted self-motion during an otherwise normal head movement. However, patients using this term may be referring to many different sensations, including vertigo. This chapter describes the clinical approach to the patient with dizziness, emphasizing the importance of the history and examination.
