Bataille: Image and Victim 1

The focus of this chapter is Bataille’s approach to the image and victim as revealed in the interpretation of images in the Lascaux caves, in Manet’s painting and, most significantly, in Bataille’s approach to Chinese lingchi torture photographs. The argument of the chapter is that, for Bataille, the image is transparent.
