Það kemur einstaka sinnum fyrir að góðir og afburðagreindir rithöfundar leyfa dauðlegum lesendum að sjá inn í hugarheim sinn og fylgja eftir greiningum sínum á mönnum og málefnum. Það er það sem Orwell gefur okkur með þessu sögusafni. Fyrir það eitt stendur það um alla eilífð, þótt tíminn hafi reynst sósíalistum af kynslóð Orwells fremur fallvaltur.
