Thomas Carew, Donne the renewer of English poetry (1633)

Abstract
Thomas Carew (1595-1635) was educated at Merton College Oxford, and the Middle Temple. Between 1613 and 1616 he was employed as a secretary by Sir Dudley Carleton, English ambassador to Venice, and subsequently to the Netherlands. Dismissed for having written aspersions on his employer’ s character, Carew resumed his career in the employ of Sir Edward Herbert (later Lord Herbert of Cherbury) on his embassy to Paris in 1619, and subsequently gained various posts at the court of Charles I. As a poet, he was influenced by contemporary Italian models, notably Marino, and borrowed much from Donne and Jonson (whom he criticized in a poem, ‘ To Ben Jonson. Upon occasion of his Ode of defiance annext to his Play of The New Inne’ ).
