Impact of Problem-Focused Coping Strategy Using Active Coping Strategy among Victims of Fire Disaster in Maiduguri Monday Market, Borno State

The purpose of this study was to determine impact of problem-focused coping strategy using active coping strategy among victims of fire disaster in Maiduguri Monday Market Borno State. Active coping is a coping strategy which involves activities like planning, confronting, constructing solution, consultation and working approach to prevent stress arising from psychological state. The objective of the study was to determine the impact of problem-focused strategy using active coping strategy among victims of fire disaster in Maiduguri Monday Market. The study was delimited to six (6) categories of traders. A cross sectional research design was used for the study. The population for this study were comprises 20,000 victims of Maiduguri Monday Market fire disaster. Purposive sampling technique was used to select six (6) trading units from (14) existing different trading units of Maiduguri Monday Market for the study. Stratified sampling technique with proportionate method was used to select (5%) from each of the six (6) categories of traders making a stratum. A sample of 516 traders was selected using convenience sampling method. Data were collected using self-developed five 5-item questionnaire. Split haft method reliability test was used to determine internal consistency of the instrument while data collected from pilot test were subjected to Spearman-Brown Formula which yielded reliability coefficient 0.846. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages were used to answer the research questions, while inferential statistics of chi-square (χ2) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The null hypothesis was rejected (p<0.05). This shows that, there was significant difference in responses on problem-focused coping strategy using active coping strategy among Maiduguri Monday Market fire disaster traders in textiles, cosmetics, food stuff, domestic cooking oil, plastic materials and domestic cooking utensils. The result of the study also indicated that, victims of Maiduguri Monday Market fire disaster employed active coping strategies and they actively engage in some efforts to re-establish their businesses after the fire disaster. The study recommended among others that, traders of Maiduguri Monday Market fire disaster should be encourage to continue employing active coping strategies and are to actively engage in some efforts in order to re-establish their businesses after the fire disaster.
