Hamlet by William Shakespeare

To write on Hamlet without Harold Jenkins’s great edition at one’s elbow would be absurd: my debts to it are manifold, as I am proud to acknowledge. With the growing recognition of Shakespeare’s art as reaching its fulfilment on the stage, interpretations by actors have a particular value: I am grateful for the interviews readily given me by Derek jacobi, Martin Jarvis, and jack Shepherd. For practical help in the preparation of this book, it is a pleasure to thank Dr James Gibson, and in cutting my oral draft, my husband, Professor Harold F. Brooks.
