Pediatric Rewards

In a beautifully composed expression of an optimistic philosophy which has guided a fruitful career in pediatrics, Dr. Parmelee emphasizes the intangible assets to be found in a career in pediatrics. In the present period of re-examination of the pleasures and benefits of a career in pediatrics, this statement should be inspiring and reassuring to those who are contemplating this choice. It is generally agreed that the pursuit of pediatrics is a hard way to acquire wealth. The overwhelming majority of those in the practice of pediatrics are ready to testify that compensation is chiefly derived from the rich rewards of sharing in the development of children and the opportunity for influencing their lives for the better. To this may be added the indubitable interest of the purely intellectual aspects of the subject matter of pediatrics. No other branch of medicine offers a greater opportunity for expression of every talent one may possess. The potential interests which may occupy the pediatrician seem infinite in their variety and appeal. Dr. Parmelee's statement is recommended to those who may be faltering in their appreciation of their role in pediatrics, or as a statement which will receive the sympathy of the majority of pediatricians.
