View through Europeana Collections
Roman limestone carving. The limestone block is roughly rectangular however the sides and back are rough and appear to be damaged. The front of the carving has a different patina to the sides and reverse, being a more weathered grey-brown as opposed to relatively fresh limestone yellow-grey of the breaks. The carving depicts an erect penis with testicles below and vagina above. Similar carvings are known from military and urban sites in Roman Britain and were often made to avert the evil eye.
