The memoir is a summary of how Thomas McGrath became Mark Vinz’s friend, colleague and poetic mentor as well as inspiring the founding of the nationally-distributed poetry journal Dacotah Territory, which Vinz edited from 1971–81. The essay contains examples of McGrath’s encouraging critiques of Vinz’s early work, a facet of his legacy that is seldom written about, and which is representative of McGrath’s mentoring of many other writers.
