One of the most popular features in The Leading Edge has been the continuing series which traces the careers and achievements of those who played major roles in the evolution of exploration geophysics. To date this series has been confined to living geophysicists; however, The Leading Edge Editorial Board recently decided that it should be extended to distinguished, deceased geophysicists. Everette DeGolyer — whose 100th birthday was celebrated last month — was an obvious choice to inaugurate this extension of the profiles series for he played a dominating role in the merger of geophysics and petroleum exploration. Without his trust in the exploration potential of geophysical techniques, his financial support, and his knack for selecting the right people for the pioneering work, this union undoubtedly would have been significantly delayed and its history radically altered.
