The Man of Sorrows with his arms spread

The artist copied Dürer’s copper engraving “Der SchDer ensmann mit Der Der Der Der” (“The Sorrows Man with his arms spread out”) from the opposite side around 1500. Christ as a redeemer figure stands in front of the Kreuzesstamm and fills out the picture almost completely. The crown of thorns on the head and only clothed with a lozenge, it spreads its arms and presents its wounds. The fallen face, drawn by the suffering, stands clearly in contrast to its athletic body (cf. Schoch I.83.26). At Christ’s feet lies the rod of his scourge, the staff with the vinegar sponge, the soldier’s coat with the cubes and the skull of Adam. Together they demonstrate the overcoming of evil and salvation from sins. While the monogram is reminiscent of Dürer as the spiritual creator of the image idea, there is no evidence of the actual artist and the time of his formation.
