The Organ for Zschortau
View through CrossRef
Built in the last decade of Scheibe's life, in a village that likely was his birthplace, Scheibe's new organ in St. Nicholas's Church, Zschortau, was examined by J.S. Bach in August 1746. This chapter discusses Scheibe's proposal and contract, questions that arise from Bach's written report, and details of the organ's design and construction. Because it still exists, was recently restored and fully 85% of its original pipework survives, the Zschortau organ is of prime importance for understanding Scheibe's approach to organ building. This chapter contains specifics concerning stops, materials used, and methods of construction.
