FIGURE ON A PEDESTAL. Guanyin, the goddess of mercy with the child and two companions on the pedestal in the form of a cliff. The goddess sitting with her right foot over her left lap holding the child in her right hand. Below the goddess’s feet two figures (dragon girl Lung Nü and the dedicated companion Chen Tsai). Between the figures a lotus flower between two against each other turned dragons. Sockel with flower-like ornaments in relief. Dehua porcelain is also known as Blanc-de-Chine in Europe. Guanyin is seen here depicted sitting on a throne with lotus flowers and acolytes around them. In her lap, a powerful child holding a lotus bud sits, because Guanyin was asked as “the one who sends sons” by many families who desperately wanted a child of male sex. Goddesses were usually adorned with jewellery, here is also the child. The cruciform decoration on the goddess’s chest made, together with the child, this Buddhist image attractive even to Europeans who revered the Virgin Mary.
