Loving Couple at a Balcony

View through Harvard Museums
A couple is seated against a large turquoise cushion with a gold lattice pattern in front of a balcony. The male figure, probably a prince, faces his lover and has his right arm around her shoulder and holds her left breast. In his left hand, he holds up a small green cup to her face. He wears a red and green turban that is tied together with a gold sash. Strands of pearls and emeralds decorate the turban. He wears a white jama (robe) and long strands of pearls around his neck. He wears pearl bracelets, rings with gems, and an armlet made of pearls and a ruby. The female figure has her head turned away from her lover, but her eyes look over at him. Her left hand holds his left shoulder and her right hand holds his right arm. She is adorned with pearl bracelets, pearl necklaces, earrings, rings, and a head ornament. A translucent red scarf with gold trim is draped around her head. Her right arm hangs over the balcony that is covered with a gold patterned fabric with a green border. A blue curtain with a red pattern is rolled up above their heads. The balcony has a decorative scallop opening. Rajput Style.
