Autel d' or (Golden Altar)

View through Europeana Collections
Niki de Saint-Phalle created, among her other works, a series of altars, which have as their central theme the woman. The female figure, which is celebrated throughout the artist's work, is once again at the centre of her creation. In the case of the work 'Golden Altar (Autel d'or)', the woman is placed in the central part of the sculpture and surrounded by a series of inlaid infants on the altar's fins. The multifaceted role of the woman, as a wife and basically her role as a mother, is one of the issues that concern her a great deal and she wishes to highlight these dimensions through her works.
