New Garden Edens

This chapter explores the rise of colonial climate engineers. French colonial engineer François Roudaire's project of transforming the Sahara entered the public debate at a time when European explorers had accomplished their first desert crossings. The Sahara Sea project benefitted from a widespread Western belief in modern technology's ability to overcome all potential environmental and technological obstacles. The chapter mentions Roudaire's extreme technological optimism, which highlights his tendency to take liberties with facts in order to fit them into his theories. It notes Roudaire's plans showcased new scientific ideas about the environment closely bound up in colonial discourses and endeavors.
