Rome, Basilica di S. Giovanni in Laterano

View through Europeana Collections
This sheet is a so-called guckbox image with a view of the archbasilica San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome. This is the church in which Georg Friedrich Händel caught a stir with his organ play in January 1707. Here you look at the eastern facade from the north, a portico portico, which is determined by high pilasters. In the middle a slightly early component with double pillars and triangular gable appears above it. The belly is crowned with human figures in the tops, erected by Alessandro Galilei (1691-1737). The building opposite the left on the edge is no longer standing today. The inscription below appears in four languages. A steer is not noted in the leaf. It was laid by the stecher and publisher Georg Balthasar Probst (1731-1801) in Augsburg around 1750. Signature: Georg Balthasar Probst, excud. A. V. Median Fol.o N.o 17. C. P. S. C. M. 48.
