Analysis of consumption pattern of leafy vegetables among households in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria

This study was on the analysis of the consumption pattern of leafy vegetables in IgboEze North local government area of Enugu State of Nigeria, owing to the abundant cases of micronutrient malnutrition in the area. The study (i) described the socio-economic characteristics of the households, (ii) identified types of leafy vegetables and pattern of consumption and (iii) identified factors that determined consumption. The study adopted the survey design. 80 households were selected. Primary data were collected. Results were presented using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. Respondents had average age of 43 years, marital status 83% with 58% females. Secondary and tertiary education were 44% and 16.6% respectively while 19% had no formal education. Household size was at an average of 6 persons per household. The major occupations were trading/farming (65%), technical skill (23%) and civil service (11.2%). Household income was on the average of ₦16,678.00 per month. The type and pattern of consumption included; ugu 3.75 bitter leaf 2.5, Sent leaf 2.87, Green 2.1, oha 1.51, anyara 2.16. The least consumed were water leaf /utazi 0.62 and okazi 0.03 time. Monthly income, household size and nutritional knowledge determined consumption at 1% level of probability. High intake of leafy vegetables is recommended in daily foods.
