Book Review: “Hussein Mohamed Adam ‘Tanzania’: In Honour of an Extraordinary Scholarship,” edited by Jama Musse Jama (2024).

This edited volume is a collectionof scholarly works in Somali Studiescompiled in honour of ProfessorHussein Mohamed Adam’s work andpersonality. Professor Hussein MohamedAdam, also known as ‘HusseinTanzania,’ was the first President of theSomali Studies International Association(SSIA) and is widely considered oneof its founding fathers. As noted byProfessor Lee Cassanelli, “While manyindividuals and host-country organizers deserve credit formaintaining this SSIA tradition of lively, open, and nonpartisandebate, perhaps no one is more responsible for the Association’ssuccess than Professor Hussein Adam, one of its ‘foundingfathers’ and its first president (Cassanelli, 2008).” On August17th, 2007, a special event in Boston honoured the esteemedscholar. The SSIA respectfully acknowledged and expressedgratitude for his patriotism and contributions to the Somalicommunity. He was also recognized at the 40th anniversarycelebration of the SSIA in Hargeysa, Somaliland, where theorganizing committee of the 13th Somali Studies InternationalAssociation Congress (SSIAC) formally acknowledged hisenduring dedication and paid tribute to his achievements.
