This introduction highlights the tremendous popularity and influence of Billy Graham. Graham touched the lives of millions of everyday people, and he enjoyed closer proximity to the top echelons of power than any other religious leader in American history, including close relationships with numerous American presidents. Yet his unflinching presentation of his interpretation of the gospel stirred resistance and criticism as well. It would be hard to find a religious leader who changed more over the course of his career, or one who presented more dramatically paradoxical faces at any given stage. Providing a preview of the book Billy Graham: American Pilgrim, the introduction suggests that Billy Graham’s career has been one of change and paradox, and it hints at how the book’s contributors demonstrate that change and paradox through the areas of religion, politics, and culture.
