Homesickness and Academic Performance in University Students

The purpose of the present study was to inspect the relationship between homesickness and academic performance in hostelites of Punjab University, Lahore. The hypothesis of this study was; that there is likely to be a negative relationship between homesickness and academic performance. Students of first year are more likely to be homesick compared to final-year students Women are more likely to be homesick as compared to men. The correlational research design was used in this study. The N=200 (100 men and 100 women) with an equal number of first-year and final-year students (N=100) were taken, aged between 18 to 26. The measures that were utilized were; the Homesickness Questionnaire (Archer, 1998) to assess homesickness and the Academic Performance Questionnaire (Ahmad & Shehzadi, 2011) to measure academic performance. For statistical analysis, Pearson Correlational Analysis was run for the relationship between homesickness and academic performance. Two independent sample t-tests were used to study the difference in homesickness among men & women and first-year & final-year university students. Results showed that homesickness has a non-significant relationship with academic performance. Men are more homesick as compared to women and there is a non-significant difference in homesickness between first-year and final-year students.
