Tory Revival in Scotland? Recent Evidence, Future Prospects

View through CrossRef
This statistical chapter by the respected pollster Mark Diffley analyses the Scottish Conservative Party’s electoral performance since 2010 and establishes whether the independence referendum (or rather its aftermath) had as profound an impact on the party’s fortunes as many observers believe. The chapter also traces shifting patterns of support among the electorate: what sort of voter had come to support Ruth Davidson’s Conservatives in 2016/17 who had not in 2010/11? Did the party manage to make inroads into working-class areas which voted ‘Unionist’ in the 1940s and ‘50s but thereafter supported other parties? Furthermore, is there an electoral ‘ceiling’ on the party’s revival?
