Chapter 5 opens with a heretofore unexamined video directed by Wong Kar-wai. Aired on MTV, and streamed by millions on YouTube, the video was commissioned by DJ Shadow for his remix “Six Days” (2001). DJ Shadow’s brilliant remix is conceived for the MTV format and is the product of a modus operandi that mirrors Wong’s own. In working for a remix artist, Wong had a taste of his own medicine in that his authorial signature has gone unnoticed. The oblivion into which this remarkable work has fallen among film audiences foreshadows Wong’s erasure of his sources in such films as Chungking Express and especially In the Mood for Love. In both films, Wong uses music covers to “cover his own tracks.” The web of culture, the chapter and with it the book concludes, is contingent on forgetting as much as remembering.
