The Man from England: Brian Trenchard-Smith in Sydney

View through CrossRef
As Viewers of Walkabout (Nicolas Roeg, 1971) and Wake in Fright (Ted Kotcheff, 1971) can attest, there is a particularly rich vision of Australia afforded to film-makers who come to the country with fresh, foreign eyes. Few would debate Brian Trenchard-Smith’s place as the King of Ozploitation cinema, shared perhaps only with Antony I. Ginnane. Both Ginnane and Trenchard-Smith understood from early on in their careers the importance of a global audience to Australian film-making – Ginnane has often quipped that his middle initial stands for “International’ – and it is arguably Trenchard-Smith’s British heritage that has afforded him such a lush vision of Australia, with a particular eye towards its relationship with genre film.
