The function envisioned for this thesis might best be expressed by stating that it is an attempt to broaden the scope of the area of embarrassment. As one reads through the study he will become aware that there are many areas, such as shame and guilt, that are closely associated with embarrassment. This study points out these similarities and proposes that the area of social maturity is related to the area of embarrassment in such a manner that as one matures, his pe.rcept1ons of embarrassing experiences change. An index of embarrassment has been devised in order to measure this proposed relationship.
