Darrel Ellis, born in New York in 1958, was part of the New York art scene of the 1980s around Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar and Nan Goldin. He was regarded as a promising, up-and-coming talent who attracted a great deal of attention. His experimental black and white photographs were shown at the MoMa, Whitney Museum and NY Artist Space. Ellis died of AIDS in 1992 at the age of 33, and his work was forgotten. Recently, it has been rediscovered and received great international attention.
