The McDowell Years

The chapter begins with brief sketches of the Oaks victories and careers of 1894 winner Selika, 1895 winner Voladora, 1896 winner Souffle, 1897 winner White Frost, and 1898 winner Crocket. 1899 winner Rush then introduces Thomas McDowell, who dominated the Kentucky Oaks through 1915, when he scored his fourth and final win as an owner with Waterblossom. He also trained Rush, making him the first man to be breeder, owner, and trainer of a Kentucky Oaks winner, repeated that feat with King's Daughter in 1906, and also scored the breeder-owner-trainer triple in the 1902 Kentucky Derby with Alan-a-Dale, as well as breeding and owning 1908 Oaks winner Ellen-a-Dale.
