Melanism in ladybirds

Abstract The Lepidoptera have been pre-eminent in the study of the evolution and maintenance of melanism. However, as mentioned in Chapter 1, there have been many studies of melanism in other groups. Some, such as the work on the spittlebug, Philaneus spunarius, do little more than confirm that evolutionary phenomena, first described in moth or butterfly species, are also relevant to other taxa.
