Non-verbal predication

Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of non-verbal predication in Bantu languages. The study of non-verbal predication in Bantu languages is particularly inviting as Bantu languages employ a rich variety of invariant particles, verbal copulas, null copulas, directly inflected non-verbal predicates, and tone to establish non-verbal predication, as examined in this overview. A predication asymmetry in terms of person (first- and second- versus third-person subjects) is noted and explored. Also addressed is a taxonomic question: what do Bantu languages tell us about how many types of copular clauses there are? Secondary predication in Bantu languages, including small clauses and depictives, is also investigated.
