dance cradle, dance rattle, dance-rattle

"Another musical instrument frequently used by the swamps is the dance rattle (hg. 173). More primitive instruments can hardly be imagined, because it consists only of a pump shell with a few cores in it. The pictured rattle is 12.9 cm. long; it is of oval shape. At one end a hole has been cut, through which the loose mass of the pumpkin has been taken out and a few pinches of dry, hard seeds have been stuffed; the hole has since been clogged with a bark piece. On one side of the rattle are a series of squares easily engraved, but they cannot be discerned in the picture. These rattles are used to mark the beat of the dance." (p. 260, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
